INTERVIEW
Tell us who you are (name, location, affiliations, etsy teams, personal info)
My name is Melissa, I live in Southern California, about 45 minutes outside of L.A… I’m an interior decorator. I’m relatively new to Etsy, still trying to find my niche I guess. I love being with my family and spending time with friends. Going to the beach or shopping is always a good day for me!

Other than creating things for etsy, what do you do?
I love all things that require creativity. My job as a decorator defiantly requires creativity and I love it. I’m currently in the process of starting my own decorating business.

What first made you want to become an artist?
There was nothing particular; I think it’s just something you’re born with. I have never been the 9-5 office person, I have to be artistically challenged.

Describe your creative process and the materials you use
Well, it doesn’t take much to inspire me, I get inspiration from practically anything. But, I spend most of my time in my craft/studio room. I sometimes will flip through magazines for inspiration. Somerset Studio is a great magazine to look at if your feeling uninspired. As far as materials go, right now its all about headbands for me, so a lot of feathers and buttons. I would like to start making cards and cuffs though, vintage looking ones.

What handmade possession to you prize the most?
This old house window my mom transformed into wall art. I’m not sure exactly what to call it, but I have it hanging in my room. It has the words family, love, create and karma on it. It’s so beautiful, I love it.

Top 5 websites you visit besides etsy?

Any advice you have for new etsy users
I wish someone would give me advice! I guess the best thing I can say is stay positive and have faith in your creations. I’m also sure being active helps, like blogging, twittering…etc.

What are your favorite features of etsy, and what new features would you like to see?
I like the idea of the Alchemy, I think that’s a pretty neat idea. I also think everyone should have the opportunity to make a treasury and be able to post it in their shop. It seems so difficult to get a treasury.

How do you promote your shop/work?
Still working on this aspect, but I’m trying to blog more and I just opened a Twitter account which is fun!

In ten years, where would you like to be?
Hopefully crafting just for fun, not to pay the bills. With a family and a really cute decorated house overlooking the ocean. A lot of traveling, but most of all just happy and in love!
